How much does it cost to brew your own beer?

posted on July 6, 2008 in how to brew beer

What does the average set up cost, and after that what do you think it costs to brew beer…. I am interested in this for a hobby and am wondering if it is really cost effective or if it is about the same…I like to throw occasional parties, so I am sure it would all be enjoyed…

its a great idea…U could start your own micro brewery for the neighborhood…U can get a starter kit for 35-50 dollars.. at world market or whole foods…there is nothing better than fresh beer…the first time I tried it I was a believer..

Is it illegal to brew beer if you're underage?

  4. The kit doesn’t cost too much but in the long run it takes money and time..same for wine. The distilling time isn’t worth the effort.Oh and legally there’s only a set amount that you’re suppose to be able to make for home use.

  7. A basic brewing kit costs about $60, you can order one from midwestsupplies.com or find one at a local brewing supply store.

The ingredients for a batch of beer cost $20-30. A batch generally makes about 50 12oz bottles of beer and takes about 6-8 weeks to complete.

It isn’t going to save you money, but If you like beer with aroma, color, and flavor you will enjoy making your own.

  8. A good beer kit will run you about $70 us dollars. it will provide you with all the necessary tools for brewing and fermenting. After that, the average ingredients will run you about 20-30 dollars, and makes 5-6 gallons. About two cases.

  9. Like everything there is a cheap way to do it and then there is the right way. I am not going to talk about the cheap way. Startup cost for equipment should run about $100-$150, you will want to get glass carboys for better results. You may also have to get a large stainless steel pot if you don’t already have one, approx 4 or 5 gallons. The ingredients tend to run about $20-30 for a normal strength beer. Remember to pay a little extra and get liquid yeast or you will never make great beer.

I found http://www.midwestsupplies.com has the best selection and cheapest prices, only downside is shipping can get you on small orders.

Don’t forget to be very sanitary.
