Home brewing?
Is it hard to make home brewed alcohol that tastes good without the proper equipment? All I would do is ferment something like grapes with yeast, then filter it with something like a coffee filter or paper towel. Would that taste disgusting without using the right stuff? What should I do to make it taste better? What other processes are necessary for this?
YUCK!!!!!!!!!
First use a wine yeast.
Second, your work area must be clean, and all utensils must be clean, you do not want to introduce a natural yeast other than the one you use.
Coffee filters will not filter properly… unless you can pressurize the must (the name for the stuff you are making).
Ferment until it stops producing gas, keep the fermention vessel (carboy) under an airlock, CO2 out, nothing gets in!
Using you hydrometer, you can get the SG of the must and when it reaches your predetermined gravity, you then transfer to another carboy to allow everything to settle and only after the wine is perfectly clear (if you are making a clear wine), then you bottle and cork.
You need propper beer or wine yeast. Bakers yeast brews rarely turn out good. And making good wine from grapes is hard unless you grow your own. Grapes for eating don’t have enough sugar, you need to add your own.
But equipment is not important as long as it is clean. I recomend picking up this book, it has everthing you need to know about making all kinds of beer wine and liquor. There are a few recipies on the website too.

If you start with crap, you will end with crap. If you really want to make your own, invest the time and money to do it right. Get a real equipment kit and go to a homebrew shop for supplies and advice. For about $30, you can brew two cases of beer. The price will come down as you go on. If you prefer wine, start with a kit and a book by Berry. First Steps in Winemaking is one but all his books are geared for beginners. I have a particular fondness for his potato wine and his lemon wine. If you buy grape concentrate, the cost will be higher but the yield greater.

I make mead and cherry wines. Mead is honey wine. I buy from a local supplier but they are online too. Listerman’s.
